Bnei Menashe (Hebrew Children of Menasseh”) are a group of indigenous people from India’s North-Eastern border states of Manipur and Mizoram who claim descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. Prior to their conversion to Christianity by Baptist missionaries in the 19th century, the Chin, Kuki, and Mizo followed animism and practiced ritual headhunting.
They have come to believe that the legendary Kuki-Mizo ancestor Manmasi was the Hebrew Menasseh, son of Joseph. The Judaic group was named Bnei Menashe by Rabbi Eliyahu Avichail, founder of Amishav, dedicated to finding the Lost Tribes and facilitating aliyah, who investigated their claims in the 1980s. Mizoram and Manipur two North Eastern states of India border Burma and Bangladesh They are also quite near Tibet see map below.
According to Times of India at least 160 people from Mizoram and 730 from Manipur belonging to Bnei Menashe (children of Menashe) community would migrate to their Promised Land, Israel,by the end of this year or early next year.
Those who will migrate includes Mizos, Paites, Kukis and Hmars from Manipur and Mizo Jews from Mizoram . Jeremiah L Hnamte, one of the leaders of a lost tribe of Israel living in Mizoram, said, “We are arranging their documents so that they are ready to migrate whenever travel arrangements are made.”
Hnamte added that after the rabbis were denied a visit to Mizoram by the government,(Hmmm wonder why ) baptism or formal conversion in Mizoram was discontinued for some time
The move of several thousand Mizo-Kuki to take up normative Judaism has created tensions in Mizoram, which is mostly Christian, and also in Manipur, where its tribe is mostly Christian. Other Mizo-Kuki reject the idea of Jewish ancestry. They are concerned about this movement adding to the SEPARATIST TENSIONS that have long plagued North-East India, as does the government.
Lalchanhima Sailo founder of the Chhinlung Israel People’s Convention (CIPC), a secessionist Mizo organization, says that he is working toward an Independant Mizo Israelite Nation inside India .He is campaigning across the state to change the name of the Mizo tribe to Chhinlung-Israel. He also talks of a greater Chhinlung-Israel state that includes the Mizos of neighboring Burma and Bangladesh, a prospect that would not be welcome in Dhaka, Rangoon or New Delhi.
